RM> I'm no expert on this opsys, except to note that RM> on a 486/33 with 8M ram it runs like a dead dog. Depends on what you want to do, but certainly 8MB is nutty. RM> That said, I had fun on the one W95 pc in the RM> workshop today. I tried to start PCAnywhere95 RM> (pain in neck, but that's another story) Yeah, Laplink for Win95 is a HELL of a lot more convenient to setup. Very decent user interface now, took a long time getting there tho. RM> and was told that one of its DLLs was missing. So I fired up RM> Explorer (son of that useless fossil File Manager) to look for it. You should be using FastFind for that. Its in the start menu. RM> Clicking on a subdir normally results in a file list appearing in RM> less than a second. Clicking on PCA's subdir gave a file list, but RM> each file took about six seconds to appear, the whole list took RM> several minutes, much disk thrashing happening the whole time. Sounds like you might have a hard drive problem. It may be retrying. Tho you can also get the system being quite slow to bring up stuff in an explorer window in a major Office app with the system very well used with lots of apps open. Thats not reproducible to a particular directory tho and doing it again after a reboot gets the proper speed back. RM> This effect was repeatable, and was seen in PCA's subdirs RM> as well. It was not seen in other subdirs selected at random. You can get that effect if you've managed to produce a very stuffed directory, lots of entrys in it. Thats a FAT limitation. Thats well down on the speed of that effect tho. RM> I ran PCA's Uninstall program. You should be using the one in the Add/Remove software. RM> It suffered from the same slow disease, and took 25 minutes to run. Certainly seems to be just slow using that directory. RM> I then ran off the end of the message |-) @EOT: ---* Origin: afswlw rjfilepwq (3:711/934.2) SEEN-BY: 711/934 712/610 624 @PATH: 711/934 |
