CL> I need some help! I have two Oscars that I have had for almost 3 years.
CL> They've done well together and have always been very healthy. Last month
CL> I noticed a spot on Ozzy that I assumed was a battle wound. However, the
CL> spot has enlarged and 3 more have cropped up. I swear, it looks like
CL> something is eating away at the fish!
If the wounds/spots are 1/16 to 1/4 or so holes that mainly are getting
deeper, it sounds like hole in the head. (Hole in the head can be on
other parts of the fish, besides the head) The disease is related to
some lateral line diseases like Hexamita or Octomitrus and is a common
disease of discus and other large cichlids.
There are cures on the market, esp for hole in the head. depending on
the cause different drugs have proven effective. Metronidazole (Flagyl)
1% dosage in the food and 12mg per liter of water, the drug added to
the water every other day for 3 days. If the fish are not eating Use
Dylox as a FISH BATH. (don't add to the tank water)
Some fish have been cured just by improving the water conditions.
