That is weird usually they go out from being to hot.

I know mine had an elecro-mechanical regulator when I bought it but I have no
idea how long it had been in there.  It was four years ago when I did replace
it I don't rememeber why. I think I drilled the rivets on it so I could 
adjust the voltage output and one of the windings was rather dark and had
that "overheated" look so I just replaced it in the clause of preventitive
maintinance.
