| subject: | Women and men in church R |
Q> I have seen the problem as exclusion of adult unattached women, but a Q> male friend who has been actively church-hunting says he has the same Q> problem, there is no place in the modern church for an unattached Q> adult male of middle years, either. Q> Q> Sunday groups are for "young adults" or "married couples" or "seniors" Q> or "divorce recovery." Where does the 30-60 year old unmarried man or Q> woman who is not suffering from divorce recovery belong? In many Q> churches, nowhere - I know because I keep asking, and I'm told to Q> either join the divorce recovery group or I get a shrug and a more or Q> less "you are the oddball so it's not our problem" dismissal. Q> Q> I have not seen that the church trying to attract women more than men. Q> To me, it still seem male-dominated, even though women have a Q> somewhat more active place than in the 50s. Q> Q> So I'm curious in what ways you are seeing the churches make men feel Q> un-included. Q> Q> True, I see a lot more women than men in mainline churches (and a more Q> even balanced in conservative churches I've attended), but the Q> mainline churches I attended in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, had far more Q> women than men, so it doesn't seem to have changed much. I've seen a lot of overt woman-centred programming focus in several different denominations (usually, I assume, out of a nagging sense of guilt that women have been so long DISplaced in the mainstream church (especially in leadership roles, other than children's programming). . . As a single young male(non-business class *G*) I was constantly falling through the cracks in seeking some sort of mid-week group(s). . . The rare men's group was generally a breakfast thing at a local restaurant, where the working men would gather at 6:30am for breakfast/coffee/prayer I was unemployed, so had no money to go to a restaurant, and my health was such that being up that early wasn't generally an option. But this is Canada, where there's been a 10+ year moratorium against hiring any white males in the national police force! So it stands to reason, sadly, in these secular times, that the churches would have a like mindset! ... nfx v3.1 --- SBBSecho 2.10-Win32* Origin: Collin County Station (1:124/6308) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 124/6308 5025 106/2000 633/267 |
