OK, found that one (must have been blind), and it controls *only* what
appears in the left-hand panel, and only in the XP view.  I use so many
utilities that that area's useless, except for sticky items like "new
Redmond document."  It doesn't do a thing for classic view, which has
those double pulldown arrows, then a piebald highlighting that blows me
away.  I'm positive there used to be a patch for 2000 that reverted to the
98 style.  I'll go hunting for it, one of these days.

My favorite "restore 'minimum surprise' interface state" patches include

o geld search back to standard, then use PDfind from an old power desk, or
Ztree, when you really want to find everything.

o geld sort order back to previous ASC/alpha behavior.

o turn on "remember open folder arrangement at startup."

(beyond the usual "remove swish/zoom/blam/wipe/fade FX.")
