There was a brilliant piece of detective work done on PC Hardware on
CompuServe (old-style, just before it got Borged/Prospero-ed), which sussed
out that XP SP1 broke something involved in transferring lots of small
files to/from a thumb drive (USB).  I forget which got worse, NTFS or FAT.
Microsoft has semi-acknowledged this.

It doesn't seem to bear on your huge-file problem, though.  You might try
Win 2k, though (g).
