I had a look at this just now.  It would appear that using the
"append" mode of MsgWriteMsg is just not possible with a JAM
message base because of file format limitations.  In which case, maybe
support for the append mode should be simply removed from SMAPI entirely
for consistency?  I suppose append mode only really made sense on old DOS
systems where available memory meant writing to a messagebase in multiple
passes was more practical.

None of the other Husky programs I looked at used the append mode.  So it
would make more sense to fix Msged so it doesn't use it.  Actually I think
Tobias said he'd done this already, but I haven't seen any evidence yet!
