Hello there, you just confirmed something I had doubts with. I read in my
computurs reference encyclopedia, that Cuba did have a species of macaws.
I knew of the Cuban Amazon and of its 4 subspecies. But I never thought of
a macaw species inhabiting the island. I'm Cuban, I love birds, therefore
I've learned as much as I can about it. Can you PLEASSSSEEEEE tell me where
you saw this picture of the Cuban Macaw. I will love to add the book or
magazine to my collection.
About the Cuban Amazon, yes they are hard to see. And also illigal to have.
Only specialiced breeders are allow to obtain permits for them. Metro Zoo
here in miami has about 32 of them in a breeding program. These were
confiscatedmostly in the Miami International Airport while attemption to pass
through Customs. Cuba breeds them also and sells them to england and
other contries that allowed their importation. At least, they used to do
that. If a bird is caught in customs, it goes to the local quarintine
station. If the workers there don't falsify its death and sells it for about
a thousand bucks, then the federal quarantine station is called and they get
the bird. They have a list of authorised breeders that can purchase CITES
species. These breeders can aquire the birds with the proper paperwork. Of
course, Zoos are given priority. This information was given to me by the
local quarantine dept.. The part about falcifying the birds death and selling
it I'm have no proof of, but, thats the word on the streets.
Please again, tell me where you saw the picture of the Cuban macaw. And if
you want to know anything about Cuban Melodious Finches let me know.
