-=> Quoting Greg Mayman to David Drummond <=- DD> I'm inclined to agree. A usable Linux can be fitted into 100Mb drive DD> in a 386SX with 8Mb, but it's far from ideal.... GM> Yes, that's just about what the book said... GM> I have run minimal systems before, but never with anything as GM> complex as Linux. A bit more HDD and RAM usually makes many GM> applications run a lot more smoothly. Well, at some point, my main Fidonet box on the LAN is likely to get the HD replaced by a Compact Flash card plugged into an adapter that will plug into the IDE connector on the motherboard. After all, since most of the important stuff happens on the file server, I don't *need* much of a HD there. And a 32 meg CF card will last a lot longer than any HD that small. Use a RAM disk for swap space, and my little DOS node will be happy as a clam. I may even move tossing to a different system, in which case I can move it from the 486 to an old 386 box that's a *lot* smaller. --- FMailX 1.60* Origin: Shadowgard (1:105/50) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 105/50 360 106/2000 633/267 |
