GM> Have you noticed that when the BBS crashes or locks up, the
GM> modems still answer the incoming calls?

 LE> Not necessarily.

They all do around here. If the comp is down their modem still
takes the call and I get back the CONNECT message from my modem,
then..... nothing!

Many LD carriers charge for calls by *assuming* that
LE> any call that lasts over some amount of time (60 seconds?) connected.

Fortunately we don't have that problem here.

LE> BTW, most BBS software has a way to set costs for netmail and not
LE> allow users to send mail that will result in a charge unless their user
LE> record shows that they've got enough credit to cover it.

Yes, I knew about that.

GM> So far he hasn't worked out how to route the netmail through the
GM> hubs, but he's looking into it.

LE> First, he has to have permission. Second, "echo-routed" netmail was
LE> never all *that* reliable. These days, I'm not sure I'd trust it.

It should be as reliable as echomail. But even an unreliable
method of getting out netmail is better than no netmail at all.
