Thanks to Nelgin and some wiki reading, I got this error straightened out.
However, I am not getting the following error:

  mike.powell@capcity2.synchro.net
    host mail.synchro.net [71.95.196.36]
    SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT
TO::
    553 Relaying through this server requires authentication.  Please
authenticate before sending.
