subject: Re: Laptop Coolers

From: "Gary Britt"

My new laptop is a P4 M 3.06 ghz gateway, and I noticed right off that the
fan would kick on often and beginning fairly quickly. Even when not under
intensive CPU usage. After a few hours of usage I noticed that the portion
of the palm rest over the hard drive began to warm up. This was while
using on a clean flat wood surface.

After reviewing the posts and links here, yesterday I placed something
under the rear edge to prop up the back end of the laptop. This made a
noticeable difference in the timing and frequency of how often the laptop
fan would come on. I think even on a clean flat surface some laptops
(certainly mine benefit from having greater clearance under the laptop
where the intake vents are located. Also, having the laptop angled up
towards the back allows the heat inside the laptop to rise to the rear of
the laptop and exit the output vents on the back edge of this notebook.. I
use my laptop everyday for hours and hours at a time. I use it as a
desktop replacement, so I wanted to make sure I had adequate cooling (hence
this thread). I'm beginning to think that just proper lift on the back
edge is all that's needed versus the more expensive cooling fans.

Being an ex-accountant I am familiar with the uses of those wonderful
off-white rubber erasers, and I concur (had the same thought yesterday)
that these would make excellent slip resistant lifts for the back edge of
any laptop.

Right now I'm leaning to just a small laptop stand to lift the rear of the
laptop or the off white rubber erasers.
