Hakkinen World Champion
-----------------------
[Sun Nov- 1 07h00 CET]
Mika Hakkinen clinched his first Formula 1 World
Championship title in the Japanese Grand Prix today. In a race full of
surprises, the McLaren of Hakkinen finished first and his championship
rival Michael Schumacher failed to finish. Second on the podium was the
Ferrari of Eddie Irvine, followed by the McLaren of David Coulthard.
Completing the points' positions were: Hill, Frentzen and Villeneuve.
McLaren win the Constructors' Championship, with Ferrari second and
Williams in the much contested, third place.
The race started in bright, sunny weather, three times! The first time the
Prost of Trulli stalled on the grid a fraction of a second before the
lights changed. After a second formation lap the grid begins the countdown
again with Trulli at the back. This time the pole position Ferrari of
Michael Schumacher stalls. It seems the engine may have overheated while
he was stopped, waiting for the grid to form behind him. A third formation
lap and the grid forms again, this time with M.Schumacher behind Trulli at
the back.
The two McLarens now first and second on the grid make a clean start,
although Coulthard's is a slow one. By the first corner Hakkinen is
leading, followed by Irvine (from 3rd), Frentzen (from 4th), Coulthard
(from 2nd).
By the end of the first lap, the top ten are: Hakkinen ->1.500s
->Irvine ->1.500s ->Frentzen ->0.400s ->Coulthard
->1.000s ->Villeneuve ->0.300s ->Hill ->0.800s
->R.Schumacher ->0.900s ->Wurz ->0.600s ->Fisichella
->0.500s ->Alesi. Michael Schumacher has moved from 21st to
12th in one lap.
By lap 5 M.Schumacher is up to 7th, but now behind Hill, who is challenging
Villeneuve, three World Champions together nose to tail. Hakkinen and
Irvine are running close together some 8s in front of Frentzen, who has
Coulthard close behind him, then 1.6s further back are the three champions.
By lap 14 Coulthard is still stuck behind Frentzen (now 28s back from
Irvine) and the 3 champions are 2s behind the Scot. Then the pit stops
start.
By lap 23 everything has settled down again and the top ten are: Hakkinen
->6.000s ->Irvine ->22.100s ->M.Schumacher ->12.100s
->Coulthard ->6.900s ->Frentzen ->0.600s ->Hill
->0.500s ->Villeneuve ->8.300s ->Fisichella ->6.400s ->Wurz
->0.700s ->Alesi.
On lap 30 Tuero and Takagi crash into each other heavily at the chicane.
Shortly afterwards M.Schumacher's rear tyre explodes ending his race, his
World Championship attempt and the possible Ferrari constructors' title.
It is thought that something from the Tuero/Takagi crash damaged the tyre.
At that moment Mika Hakkinen became World Champion.
By lap 40 the pits stops were over and the top ten were: Hakkinen
->24.200s ->Irvine ->25.300s ->Coulthard ->27.200s
->Frentzen ->0.900s ->Hill->0.500s ->Villeneuve ->12.500s
->Fisichella ->7.800s ->Alesi ->15.500s ->Wurz ->12.700s
->Herbert .
They rolled along to the end with the first four well spaced. Hakkinen did
slow considerably in the last few laps, but was never in real danger from
Irvine. On the final lap Hill dives down the inside of Frentzen at the
chicane to take 4th and Alesi passes Fisichella for 7th.
Hakkinen won the race by 6.5s from Irvine, who was followed 22s later by
Coulthard, who was 46s in front of Hill, Frentzen and Villeneuve.
The best three sector times were: S1: M.Schumacher (42.668s), Irvine,
Hakkinen, S2: Coulthard (36.032s), Hakkinen, M.Schumacher, S3: M.Schumacher
(21.155s), Hakkinen, Irvine.
The best three exit speeds in each track sector were: S1: Coulthard
(210kph), Hakkinen, Irvine, S2: Hill (307kph), Herbert, Alesi, S3:
Coulthard (279kph), Alesi, Herbert.
After the race ex-World Champion Keke Rosberg (Hakkinen's manager) said it
was a fantastic feeling to have started with a teenager many years ago and
taken him all the way through to Formula 1 World Champion. He said he was
having an unbelievable day as his son Nico had won in American Karting
earlier in the day.
In the interview afterwards, a serious looking Mika Hakkinen (winner) said
that since his Formula 1 start in 1991, it had been a fight each year to
maximise the results for the team and now he has won the championship he
can look back on all the years of hard work and be very happy. When asked
if he felt a little happier when Michael Schumacher stalled on the grid and
had to start from the back, his face broke into a large grin and he simply
said yes. When asked if he had found it an easy race, he said that it was
not the hardest race he had had. Being in front and in touch with the pits
he used the radio a lot to gauge how David, Michael and Eddie were doing
and so he could keep ahead. He said that one of the problems of a race
like this was that lap after lap it becomes very tiring and with no-one
right behind you, it is easy to lose concentration. Ron kept calling him
on the radio just to make sure he was still awake.
Eddie Irvine (2nd) said that it was very strange to suddenly find Michael
starting from the back and so it was up to him to make the running. He
made a great start and tried very hard to keep up with Mika, but some tyre
problems made him drop back. Before the race they had discussed all sorts
of race tactics based upon how the two Ferrari's and McLaren's would start,
having Michael at the back of the grid was not one of the scenarios. For
him it became a straight race with Hakkinen to see who could win.
David Coulthard (3rd) said that in the earlier starts his race engineer had
warned him that he was not reving the engine enough. When they actually
got away he found he was then reving too much and spun the wheels, so
Irvine and Frentzen got past. He thus found himself stuck behind Frentzen
for the early part of the race, during which time he lost touch with the
two front runners.
A spokesman for Bridgestone (winners of the Tyre
Championship) said they were very happy with the result. It had been a
very hard year and is now a very Good Year!!
