  I think link tracking is appropriate for the Desktop, but I'm not sure
I'm comfortable with applications doing link tracking.  What if I want to
branch an application and reinstall.   If I rename the application tree,
which data files end up being referenced?    Of course the whole branching
idea is fraught with peril unless I know in detail how the application
handles settings and data.

   Even the desktop link tracking is sometimes misleading; Once I had to
restore from a mirrored drive and I had to install both drives at once.
This changed drive letter assignments which send the desktop scurrying off
to find all the missing shortcuts.   Of course it found them on the wrong
drive and could not find them on the right drive after I removed the mirror drive.
