MS> i am trying to get a 55gal tank, but since i am realtively new to
MS> this hobby i was wondering if anyone could tell me what equipment i
MS> will need in order to run a large tank with the least maintainence.
Least maintenance will have much to do with the type of fish as well as the
gear.
Start easy. Get the plants you like, and the gravel of a color you like
(larger pebbles mean less fish loss. Dunno why unless they are eating the
tiny chuncks and getting hurt by them).
Setup the tank. Bottom filters are nice but really a mess to clean when the
time comes. Side filters need cleaning more often but take only 5 mins each
time (as opposed to emptying the tank and removing thr gravel etc). Add your
filter choice, some stress coat, some of the liquid bacteria mix sold for new
tanks, and plants of your choice. Let it run for about 4 days at least.
Now go fish shopping. If you desire tropical fish, purchase a water heater.
(not needed for goldfish). Look carefully at what is mixed in the tanks at
the store. Ask questions. Dont assume 'all fish mix' because they dont.
Dont buy a betta male. Things easy on new folks: Tetras, Guppies, Goldfish.
Just dont get crazy and mix the 3!
Start with inexpensive fish. You will suffer some losses at the start and if
you pay 3$ each for 10 fish, you can be expecting to be out 15$ about a week
later.
