Well, they do but they also tolerate it very well.  The other fish however 
may not which is why in general you dont mix goldfish with anything else.

First, throw out the old gravel and buy new.  Next, use one of the tank 
starter solutions to get the bacteria back to the normal levels. This takes 1 
day before adding the fish and wont really be right until the fish have been 
in there a week or 2 at least.

Smile, try the following simple and easy types:  Guppies, Goldfish.  Comet 
goldfish are often 2 for a dollar and guppies not far off that cost for the 
stock types.  (Oh, and get one or the other, not both in the same tank!)
