I have a 55 gal. tank myself (Marine).  I have an undergravel filter
with two 150 gph powerheads.  I also use a Whisper (I forget which
model) Power filter, which also filters 150-200 gph.
I use a Viso-therm heater, I think it's 250 or 300 watts... and a little
thermometer stuck on the side of the tank furthest away from the heater.
I only mantain a few fish, so I seldom do water changes.  I have to
clean alge on a weekly basis.
