In general I agree with you. And of course it's worth remembering that 99%
of all "geeks" are male, which means that if you are catering to
them with your products you are missing half the market.

The only audio or video component my wife ever took a shine to was my
Audiotron networked music player. It provided utility that was compelling
to her, but it did so in a manner that was very easy to figure out and use
- no perusing of the manual required.

The stuff I see that is successful in the living room succeeds because it
is simple not because it is something geeks led with or even prefer.  Those
you call geeks tend to like switches and knobs and plenty of options.
