I just had a chance today to play with a new plinker I picked up
cheap on a mail-order inventory reduction deal. Don't know why these
are being sold cheap, but the price was really right.
Anyway, the gun is the Daisy 2002 35-shot pump action
repeating CO2 pellet rifle.
This rifle has the elements of what could be the perfect airgun. Rapid-
fire repeating, large(OK, REALLY LARGE) magazine capacity, no pumps or
springs (my prejudice here), good power, straightforward operation and
design, and good looks. All it needs is to be built by ARS/Career but
with a Feinwerkbau trigger, and you would have absolute perfection.
As it is, it is an ungodly fun backyard plinker with awesome rate-of-fire
but a trigger and "chassis" as would be expected for the under $40.00
price I paid.
I had heard of these 35 shot mag-clip designs before but had stayed
away from them because of the perception that they would only shoot
wadcutters, and those unreliably. At this point, what a pair of
misconceptions!!!!! Even the catalog salesman warned me on the phone
that it would only shoot "flat" pellets. I figured OK for a fast cheap
plinker. Then I get it and read the manual. No such restriction in the
manual. Two different types of clips (RED and BLACK) for various
different pellets. Rifle comes with the RED clip, which will shoot
Crosman wadcutters as well as Crosman pointed hunting (among many others).
No mention of Premiers or Crosman domed for either mag though.
So I try it out. Drop in Co2 cartridge like below breech loading
of a shotgun. Slap one lever shut, you're charged. No screws, no
threads, dirt simple, works, bloody quick. Pump, BLAM, Oops, better
sight the sucker in. Done, pump, blam, pump, blam, pump, blam, etc.
etc. etc. ......... what a gas! At 40 feet, will bury a Crosman
wadcutter 3.5" into a block of sculptors clay, 4.5" for a pointed
hunting pellet. Not even a hint of a jam or a pause. 35 wadcutters
gone, not a problem, lots of fun. Load up 35 pointed pels. About
20-25 of them later, getting low on gas, my target is in very serious
need of repair. I had fun.
This Daisy helical Mag-clip seems to be REALLY, REALLY, REALLY neat.
Easy to fill, easy to load, handles VARIETY of ammo. huge capacity.
A really sweet piece of engineering.
Can't say much for long-term reliability yet, but the overall
feel of the gun is of a drug-store plastic "toy". Trigger pull is
awfully hard and awfully unrepeatable. Pump mechanism is loose
feeling and has no detent to lock it forward. Overall gun is a
cheapie, but that is the price I paid. However, the Mag-clip design
is a superb piece of engineering that looks of high quality.
This mechanism is just SCREAMING to be put into a high quality frame
with good trigger and barrel. Maybe Daisy is listening????? If not,
maybe Tim and LD could concoct something, like add this to the PCP
Brno Tau rifle!!! Not really joking here, either.
