Yoadie yo ho !!!
Based on a message from Mark Dudley to All,
MD> Anyway, I added a goldfish (hey, he was free..).. the folks at the fish
MD> store said that they created a lot of ammonia but that just 1 of them
MD> shouldn't be a problem with the other fish and the size of the tank.
MD> Well, a few weeks later the water started getting cloudy, I did my
MD> usual partial water change, etc.. but it would just get cloudy again
MD> very quickly. To make a long story short, I came home from work one
MD> day, and they were all dead. There was no real indication before I went
MD> to work that anything was wrong with them.
gildfish are not fit to be kept with any other fish in tanks. That is just a
fact. Goldfish do not only produce a lot of waste buyt also have totally
different temperature requirements than most tropical fish. The people at the
store either had no idea about fishkeeping or lied to you to sell the fish.
Don't do it again...
MD> Now that I've disassembled everything and cleaned it, etc.. I want to
MD> set the tank back up.. Any recommendations on what to populate it with?
MD> I'd likely just replace what was there before, but if any one has
MD> suggestions on interesting/colorfull fish that I could get instead...
Since you sound like a beginner, I would go for purely beginner fish. Bettas
(Siamese fighting fish) are not. I don't know if the Zebra you ment was a
Zebra
Danio or a Zebra Cichlid. The first one is a good community fish, the second
one
is a good community fish killer :). If I were you I'd look into Colisa lalia
(dwarf gourami), which I kept for years, found them very easy to keep,
ively,
interesting and very beautiful. I would not go for neon tetras, they have a
requirement for low pH which is hard to get for a beginner. I'd also go for
so-called Kuhli loaches (Pangio kuli sumatranus) - very interesting and
retty
bottomfeeders. Hm, I can't think of anything in particular now...
MD> Tank has 150 watt heater (with thermostat), over the side filter (will
MD> likely get an under gravel filter before setting it back up), automatic
I would personally not recommend UGFs. The external Power fiulter will be
ood
enough and the UGF can be hard to maintain if something goes wrong. Also it
s
killed by medication.
