I'd get an undergravel filter and an EMPEROR 400.  I'd also recommend trying 
to grow some real plants, as they help the water stay clean.  I've had good 
luck with java fern.
As for fish, it really depends on what you're into.  A 55 is plenty for a 
nice family of cichlids.  If you're into something a little more exotic, I've 
got a Rope Fish (or Reed Fish) in one of my tanks.  I have a guppy population 
that maintains itself and breeds just enough extra to supply food the Rope 
Fish.  There's also a pair of Moonlight Ghouramis for some color.
