And the packing techniques;  I had a BASsomething.COM program that 
either packed a laid-out program for greater speed of execution, 
or spread it out for editing....

This inevitably led to packed lines like...

100 for i=1 to 10:for j=1 to 10:let mat(i,j)=i*j:print thi$:next 
j,i:etc=etc+1:rem fixed the flaw....

...using up to 256 characters that sped up execution under the 
interpreter amazingly.
