Well, do you want community fish or what?? I had a 20gal that had some
swordtails, an algae eater (I can't spell it:Plecatumas (?) ) and some other
peaceful community fish. That worked out great. My swordtails kept
multiplying to the point that I was begging people to take them!

Now, in another 20gal (my hubbies) we had a less peacful neighborhood. Lot
of troublemakers there. I had 2 baby albino oscars, some bala (sp?) sharks,
and an algae eater. We eventually had to get a 55 to put them in. Funny, the
fish that the oscars were origionally in the tank with stayed fairly small.
The oscars could probably have eaten them or kicked their tails, but they did
not mess with them, although they were MUCH bigger. However, any new fish,
bigger, same size or otherwise, ended up dead due to the oscars. I loved my
oscars and would like to get another pair. Mine were a breeding pair, but the
water was too hard for the eggs to live. We tried to fix it, but it never
helped. (well water) Anyways, back to your question, depends on what kind of
tank that you want to have.

 Sorry to have rambled! :)
