I suppose if the Saudi's had applied more of their donations
to Science, rather than radical fundamentalist mudrassas, they
might have saved more souls.

It's not as though earthquakes aren't a known threat in the
area.  Bam in Iran a year ago or so, and a couple in Turkey in
recent memory.

And it's not as though Islam hasn't, in the distant past at
least, had a tradition of scientific study.  The Baghdad
caliphate in the 10th Century was perhaps the leading center
in the world.  We have the words ALGEBRA, ALGORITHM (named for
the mathematician Al Kwarizme), etc., which come from those
days.  That we know anything at all about Plato, Archimedes,
& Pythagoras, isn't because the Roman Empire preserved their
works--it was Islamic translations that made their way back
into Europe after the "Dark Ages".

What happened to you guys?!
