I think that an undergravel filter and (2) 200 gph Magnums would do
fantastically in a 55, especially if you choose to go with some of the
messier fish. (2) 150-200 watt heaters, and try to keep the tank away from
windows, air vents, or anywhere else that there could be drafts or sudden
changes in temp's. I would suggest that you set it up and let it run for at
least 2 weeks with no fish, and let the water cycle and "settle" so to speak.
Plants are good (the real kind) but some fish will eat them. Also, put in
3-4 inches of gravel in the tank, and let it slope a little, being a bit
higher in back than in front. Anything that goes in the tank (rocks, ect.)
really should be boiled first. Fish are extremely sensitive to some things
like chemicals and such. That is about all. As for fish, I would suggest
going to some pet stores and what-not and finding out what kind that you
like. Do a little research. Some fish can live for years, so you could be
with them for a while!! :) Good Luck!
