JP>-> (good for use against a mixed target, i.e. troops and
JP>-> equipment) or C) DELAYED, explodes after impact (so it
JP>-> will penetrate buildings, bunkers etc.)
JP>Are these three DIFFERENT shells or is there a way to set the same shell
JP>for Timed, Quick, or Delayed? If so, must be a pretty neat fuse.
Same shell, different fuses. Fuses are seperate, for storage and
transport safety.
JP>How long would it take to set the amount of time on each Timed shell?
JP>Ie: Would calling for Timed slow down the response time and rate of
JP>fire?
Couple of seconds maximum, most of the delay is with the fire control,
which is why forward observers learn how to call rounds in directly.
JP>I thought smoke rounds were used for spotting? I would think that the
HE with impact fuses are used for spotting (spotting where rounds
actually hit and adjusting fire), when you are on target to your desired
proximity, you call fire for effect, and that's when you get the mix. A
Battery round consists of 3 guns, a battalion round consists of 3
batteries plus two extra guns, for a total of 14. This is where the FDC
makes their money, making those 14 rounds go in the same spot, or make a
pattern as you have called in. An HE with an impact fuse has a 98% kill
radius of 50 yards on flat ground (40 lbs of high explosive surrounded by
a 160 lb internally scored shell), so if you call in a batallion round
for troops in the open, you'd want it in about a 100 or 200 yard circle
rather than all on one point. If you had a tank though, you'd want all
the round to get as close to the target as possible, since generally only
a direct hit will kill the tank reliably.
JP>disadvantage of using WP is that your spotting rounds are the ones MOST
JP>likely to cause a "friendly fire" incident, no?
Despite the jokes, WP is not too often used. It's nasty nasty stuff, big
time war crime for using it on troops, generally takes some brass to okay
its use. Main use is for ammo or fuel dumps. Which is why saddomy
hussein had hordes of women and children trucked in to live on the fuel
and ammo dumps during the gulf war: so we would not make these a priority
target.
That's a true coward for you: hiding behind women and children.
