I'm familiar with the 285. Never used one, but know it's the "step up"
from my old 283. If I can't get one close to the Agfa unit I used to
have, the 283 or 285 would be one of my other choices. In fact, if it
weren't for the fact I really want the fill flash, the 283/285 would
probably be my number 1 choice.

The Promaster flash I looked at in the store, does have a module for the
Canon FD lens mount cameras. The guy in the store wasn't sure if the
model with the built-in fill flash had a module for the Canon AE-1. I
went to Promaster's web site, and found that they do.
However, I went to Ritz Camera/Camera World/Wolf Camera's family of web
sites, and found a Quantaray flash unit that is pretty close to what I
want. Has a dedicated module for the Canon FD series lens mount
cameras, as well as a side-mount handle, with the appropriate extension
cord to leave the dedicated module on the camera's hot shoe. As a side
benefit, the handle mount accepts four "C" cell batteries, so I'd
probably get more life out of them than I would the 4 "AA" batteries
this particular flash normally uses.
W>Vivitar 365 that requires a separate power pack. For close-up shooting with
W>fill, you can do what you did with the 283. Happy shooting!
It's going to be interesting, taking the wedding photos of a young lady
whom I also took baby photos of, when she was about 2 months old!
W>Cheers, good to hear from you! :)
Likewise.
