subject: Re: Google Desktop Search vs Microsoft Windows Search

From: "Frank Haber"

I usually forget to use the indexing service because of several failings,
on machines I've touched.

o Miserable interface {at}filename? gimmeabreak.

o Unreliable and intermittent. I'm continually geting "some of the
drives in this search are not indexed," when the search is clearly on
C: D: (All Hard Disk Drives), and C: and D: are clearly running the
indexer, as displayed in their properties.

o Stuff appears hours after it's created or moved.

o Even more unreliable on XP home, for some reason. My sample is small; I
generall keep the thing turned off.

o "Different" on Win2000, somehow. Life is short; until someone
can cook up a good tips file on the .msc control, I can't be bothered. I
know this sounds like I'm playing ignorant trog, but if a feature burns me
or irritates me, it carries an extra burden. It's going to have to prove
itself to me all the more before I extend my fingers once more into the
flame.

In contrast, things like PowerDesk PDfind are scrutable, and just work.
