You may not want "pirating TV shows" as an example, but it is a
very compelling one for non-geeks. They see the results at their geek
friend's house and want to get them too. Pretty soon there are products to
make it easy and intuitive. This is driving the current adoption of home
media systems in the same way as porn drove the adoption of the VCR.

Around these parts, we're at the stage where the geeks find and download
the shows then burn them to DVD for their own use and for swapping with
friends. There's a demand here because the local TV channels don't buy the
shows because they don't think they'll rate. Sales of legally released TV
shows on DVD sets are also brisk, proving that people would be prepared to
pay for them if they were legally available.

Gee, spend money trying to stem the demand or make money satisfying it...
you'd think the media companies would show more common sense.
