The Standard Template Library. It is a part of the standard C++ library
(and isn't really distinguished as a separate entity in the C++ standard).
Before the C++ standard, it was a separate library developed by a couple of
people at Hewlett-Packard interested in so-called generic programming.
It provides many data structure and algorithm building blocks based on the
C++ template concept. Templates are kind of an advanced C++ facility, but
basically they allow you to create zero-overhead macro-like reusable data
structures with user-defined type parameters, allowing compile-time type
checking. For example, a linked list of objects of your own type can be
created by saying std::list.
