| subject: | Google Desktop Search vs Microsoft Windows Search |
From: "Gregg N" This article http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32109-2004Oct14.html says that Google has beat Microsoft in providing index-based desktop searching for Windows. However, Windows has included an indexing service in Windows since Windows 2000. I use it frequenty. It is nice to be able to find a file in 2 seconds rather than via an exhaustive search. It also seems to be more powerful than what Google is offering, in that it supports a query language in addition to free form entry. The only complaint I have about it is that it is not obvious how to use it via the normal Windows search GUI. For example, to use it to find a file, you have to enter the search query {at}filename myfile.xyz in the "Containing Text" field, and not the "Search for Files" field (Windows 2000). Otherwise, the indexing service is usually not used even if it is enabled.
