Nothing stored on the printer. The key for these boxes I guess, is the
ability to restrict print access to allow only access from specific IP
addresses. That's what the Lexmark Laser new firmware allows for the
ethernet port. LARGE step up from the config that was possible in earlier
firmware. I was at a friends house last night for a party, and one of the
people works for the State of TN, and we got to talking about network
printing (he works for one of the state agencies, and mentioned the Lexmark
Management capability in the latest firmware versions.). I checked, ours
were everywhere from 1.8.x through 1.10.10. The latest is 1.10.196, so I
downloaded it and used tftp after starting the tftp service on the print
server, and upgraded all the firmware. Now, on the Advanced page of the
TCPIP, is a place to enter up to 10 specific IP addresses that are the only
addresses that can print to the printer.

Now, just need a gadget for our C-Itoh Line Printer (checks) so that we can
print from the new servers location to the new temp office location. For
this printer, we can physically turn it off when not in use, so that should
be pretty secure.. For the laser, I guess the worst would be
running out the paper, IF they can spoof the IP address, if they can figure
out what valid IP address is entered as able to print.

It's going to be a fun day, for sure. Hopefully, this only needs to be in
place for a few months, at most.
