It's incredibly frustrating trying to learn any of the serious applications of C++. One major problem is that current development systems are built by and for people who have grown with Windows from the early days. So, you often find that the clever "high end" functions that are convenient to use don't do some of the operations you would like. Then you need to study 1000 details with pretty poor over-all documentation. Playing with VC++ GUI development would be quite interesting, but if you're wanting to learn the basics, I would recommend looking at the GUI later!
