The Word document viruses are a serious threat to network security. One
slight modification to an existing version (which is available with full
source code within the document) can turn it into a file-deleting monstor.
I'm this " " close to disabling macro execution in Word completely, and I
blame Microsoft for this security hole. They are always LAST to think about
security. Off the rant, back to the solution.
In addition to full daily backups, I run F-Prot Professional for Netware on
the server, which automatically quarantines infected files and scans all disk
writes (it currently does not clean macro viruses), and F-Prot and F-Macro on
the workstations and server directories. If I remove any one of these
components, Word macros start cropping up again. F-Prot comes with real-time
scanning under Windows, but I found too many incompatibilities introduced and
was forced to disable it system-wide.
McAfee, Symantec and IBM were too slow in responding to the macro (and
subsequently Hare) problems to suit my tastes. For 25 users, you can expect
to shell out about a grand for an unattended, server-based virus scanner.
