For starters, the undergravel filter you mentioned is a very good idea.
Also, NO GOLDFISH! Not only do they pollute the tank, but they prefer the
water significantly colder than your tropicals, so the goldfish didn't like
it either! Anyway, I'm real partial to Black Skirt Tetras. They add a lot
of contrast and movement. And they can live through just about anything.
I've also had a lot of luck with Giant Danios. Tiger Barbs are great, but
they're fin nippers. If you get them, you need to get 4 or 5. If there are
enough to school, they play tag with each other. If there aren't, they nip
at the other fish.
You might also consider getting some water testing kits. They will help you
monitor the specifics. There are several ways the water can go bad, and
treatments differ depending on the problem. And most important, remember to
set your tank up and run it for a week or so before you add the fish. This
allows the chemicals to recah a balance. Then add the fish just a few at a
time so your levels don't spike.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
