That's because US propaganda is much more effective than Russian one :)
Ask wherever in the world about International Space Station, and most people
would think it's an American one, while Russian participation was and still is
quite big. And similar situation is in other fields of space programs. At
least, here in Russia most people know that Americans were the first (and only)
guys on the Moon, while how much Americans know that the first man in space was
Y.Gagarin and the first satellite ("sputnik") was Soviet?
