 Well, if you can get past both Bats scenes, you can continue at those
scenes. If you get killed at the Dragon's Lair, you can continue a few scenes
before it.
 
 I'll have to check how many scenes you have to get past to not start over at
the beginning, but typically it seems about 3 scenes behind the one you get
killed on. The bats scenes seem to me to be the first place you can continue
from the middle.
