I think it's possible to have different points of view on this.  Granted
that if you don't learn pointers, you can possibly write usable code
sooner, but OTOH learning pointers really helps you understand what the
computer is doing under the hood when you then do it the easier way. I've
never used C or C++ in a production environment, but I am really glad I
took those classes and that we learned to do stuff the hard way because I
think it made me a better programmer.
