The defining attribute of the LDS is their belief in the Book of Mormon, a
testament of a biblical people who migrated to the new world before Christ
and of Christ resurrected in the New World amongst them.  This is in
addition to the old and new testaments.  Although there are doubtless many
other important beliefs, some of the most observable are a belief in
marriage for eternity and salvation of one's ancestors with the aid of
living family (simplifying it somewhat).  Hence the close attention to
family and genealogy.

Incidentally, the LDS set out to settle their own territory in the west of
the USA and I believe Las Vegas (where you live?) may have been founded by
them.  Certainly you will find may LDS churches around you and in most
parts of western USA (look for the angel Moroni, who wrote the book,
blowing a trumpet on their roof).

I know very little about SDA.
