What was worse was point ignition systems using transistors. The problem
was the miniscule base current didn't burn the contact surface vapours
like the old straight coil type would and a film would build up over
time creating an intermittant resistor where there shouldn't be any.

What with engines getting smaller and running at higher rpm to make up
the same hp's, a mechanical ignition system will eventually have the
points floating at those ever higher rpm's. Points are less practical
now with computerized engine control systems.
