I can still remember the Woolworth's I used to go to as a kid, RJT> right next to a W. T. Grant, a similar chain. Both long gone... I think what typically happens is that the original founder having become successful with one store then starts building a chain. After the founder dies the family basically runs the chain into the ground out of disinterest and neglect. The chain is then ripe to pick up for a song by some offshore corporate conglomerate that owns other competing store names. A few years on and they close the original chain since it no longer fit the evolving corporate vision and didn't have the returns that were expected. Besides the original agenda of the purchase was really land speculation all along since most of those old store chains were in prime downtown locations and the land value was worth way more.
