Larry, if you are using a USR Sportster Si, then chances are the
strings recommended by Terminate are not appropriate for your modem. 
The Si is an RPI modem and does _not_ use the normal USR command set.
It won't matter much - there is no magic init that will make your RPI
modem reliable _unless_ you use a comm program that supports RPI _or_
a Windows program using the WinRPI driver.
