I did a four-course series -- 2 courses of C followed by 2 courses of C++.
The C course, at least the first one, was at the same time something like a
beginning programming class, among other things we learned control
structures etc. Pointers were I think in the second C course, along with
data structures. (The linked list was an epiphany
experience for me, OK, I'm a geek.) Classes came in the C++ course but
I don't remember now whether in the first or second one, but we definitely
did inheritance. We didn't get to the STL or GUI
development.

I think this was a good way to organize it. For one thing, you could
see the progression from a struct to a class. The linked list,
especially the double-linked list, to me was a step along that path,
because the pointers at the ends kind of make the struct more than just a
way to keep different data elements together.

I still think putting GUI in a beginning C++ class is counterproductive.
You can do a GUI much easier in other languages. The power of C++ lies
elsewhere, the huge thing is the ability to completely control what your
program is doing. (Of course, that's what makes it dangerous too!)
