Just two examples.

loglines2 is a global variable (it's actually not global because of the
"static"; however it can be used by any of the functions in this
source file). In the code, you could replace loglines with loglines2.

loglines is a function variable that is "static" (data in normal
memory, not on stack; value is retained between calls to the function
holding the variable).
