Like Gregg, I find the problem a bit odd. Perhaps it was more clearly spelt
out in the orignial. At any rate, whereas I have never seen a C++ exam, I
feel qualified to say NO, this is NOT a reasonable question for 15 minutes
work in an exam for an introductory class!

OTOH if the teacher gave an example during the class which was quite
similar to the question, and if you were allowed to make use of the lesson
material, it may be reasonable.
