Powered flight is the rule, I think you have to be within 1 or 2 hrs range
given 1 functional engine.
But still, you have a good point, where would that get you? Probably a
500km radius. Most northern communities have airports, seems likely there
may be a few which have longer runways than would be needed and someone
pays them to keep them functional...
I saw a map once of what governs the routes of the 777 flying the Pacific.
There are some military airports in Siberia which apparently are willing to
allow a diversion in emergency. I sure hope the local fighter pilots know
about it!
