it's possible one of the files (most likely HOSTS) got corrupted or some
weird entry is allowing the hosts file to resolve a TLD (maybe it has an
entry for com instead of something.com). Just use the rename as a test to
see if that's where the problem is or not. If you rename them and the
problem goes away then look for some weird entry in the hosts file.
