Sorry, I can't access the net easily from here, but might it be akin
to tenitus, or like anyone else loosing frequencies through large
exposure to noisy environments?

Now, I know not to generalize, and that there are many reasons for a
lack of hearing, but is it attributed to a physical cause, and just be
more pronounced due to a sensory deprivation?

I am NOT trying to insult anyone here, but if I might seem
condecsending by calling all deaf, "deprived".
