Sorry, I can't access the net easily from here, but might it be akin to tenitus, or like anyone else loosing frequencies through large exposure to noisy environments? Now, I know not to generalize, and that there are many reasons for a lack of hearing, but is it attributed to a physical cause, and just be more pronounced due to a sensory deprivation? I am NOT trying to insult anyone here, but if I might seem condecsending by calling all deaf, "deprived". ...
