It's been a while since I looked at that, but I think such identifiers are
reserved only at file scope unless the underscore is followed by another
underscore or an uppercase character, in which case they are reserved in
any context. The rules may actually be more baroque than that. To be safe,
as you said, it's best to avoid defining names with leading underscores.
