Hi, just found the sysop had added this conference to his bbs (Thanks to him,
I had asked for it) I am 55 years old and had polio when I was 13. I was
very very fortunate, only spent a month in the hospital with no paralysis and
then was released to attend school the rest fo the year a half day with rest
prescribed after school most of the rest of the day. Went into the Army upon
graduation with the only thing noticed from my bout with Polio being some
scoliosis of the back. All was fine until about 6 to 7 years ago when I
began to be fatigued a lot and seemed not to rest after a night's sleep.
Went to the doctor(s) and after a very thorough workup was told they could
find nothing wrong at all (even went to a Phychiatrist to see if I was
depressed and didn't know it) I WASN'T ...Finally went to the Dallas
Rehabililtation Institute which I had learned specialized in Post Polio
Syndrome and sure enough was diagnosed as having it. I was advised to rest
frequently and exercise moderately. Have almost done so and don't experience
as much fatigue and also have occasionally slept for 12 to 14 hours or more
at a time and that seems to help me not to get too tired...........Was just
wondering if anyone else out there is in a similar position and if you may
have found something I haven't that makes your days better. I forgot to
mention I haven't seemed to lose any strength at all and was also wondering
if anyone else who has had a similar case as mine has experienced any loss of
function as the Syndrome progressed. I know I am very fortunate to have had
such a mild case, but am curious as to what to expect if anyone had their
Polio earlier than I or has had the Syndrome longer. Thanks for any news.
